چکیده

In this paper, we report our recent work on closed form solutions to the blocking and dropping probability in wireless cellular networks with handoff. First, we develop a performance model of a cell in a wireless network where the effect of handoff arrival and the use of guard channels are included. Fast recursive formulas for the loss probabilities of new calls and handoff calls are given. Algorithms to determine the optimal number of guard channels and the optimal number of channels are developed. To determine the handoff arrival rate into a cell, a fixed-point iteration scheme is proposed, and the uniqueness of the fixed-point is shown. Then, we allow for failure and repair of channels and hence provide a performability analysis for cellular systems. We present a hierarchical model combining both performance and availability and its closed form solution. Performability measures of interest are explicitly given. 2002 Elsevier Science Inc. Modeling the Goodput of TCP NewReno in Cellular Environments

In this paper, we present an analytical model that characterizes TCP NewReno’s goodput as a function of roundtrip time, average time duration between handoffs, average number of packets reordered during a handoff, and the congestion window threshold. In cellular networks, the effective packet-loss probability for a flow experiencing handoffs is not exactly equal to the physical-layer packet-los...

Modeling Cooperation between Nodes in Wireless Networks by APD Game

Cooperation is the foundation of many protocols in wireless networks. Without cooperation, the performance of a network significantly decreases. Hence, all nodes in traditional networks are required to cooperate with each other. In this paper, instead of traditional networks, a network of rational and autonomous nodes is considered, which means that each node itself can decide whe...

A FAHP Weighting Scheme for System Attributes in Heterogeneous Wireless Networks

In a heterogeneous wireless network, different wireless access technologies with different operating parameters coexists in an overlay fashion. These wireless networks are deployed in order to provide different type of services to Mobile Stations (MSs) equipped with multiple interfaces, based on the principle of Always Best Connected (ABC) network. In such a dynamic environment, an MS can seaml...

Innovative Performance Evaluation of Unnecessary Handoffs and Handoff Failures during Access Network Selection between WLAN and Cellular Networks

Received Signal Strength based (RSS) horizontal handoff algorithms have been most commonly used by nearly all second generation and third generation wireless networks in a homogeneous environment. Vertical handoffs or network selection algorithms are the terms coined due to integration and interoperability of existing wired and wireless access networks under the umbrella called as 4G. This work...
